What is a QR code and how does it work?
A QR code (Quick Response) is a type of two-dimensional barcode that can store up to 4,296 alphanumeric characters or 2,953 bytes of binary data. It was invented in 1994 by Denso Wave, a Toyota subsidiary, to track components in automobile manufacturing. Unlike traditional barcodes that only store data horizontally, QR codes store information in both dimensions.
QR codes include built-in error correction (Reed-Solomon) that allows the code to be read even if partially damaged or obstructed. There are 4 correction levels: L (7%), M (15%), Q (25%), and H (30%), where a higher level allows more damage but reduces storage capacity.
Practical use cases
Marketing and business: Link to your website, digital menu, virtual business card, or review page. QR codes on business cards increase contact rates by 40%.
WiFi: Generate a QR code with your WiFi credentials so guests can connect without needing to dictate passwords. The format is: WIFI:T:WPA;S:network_name;P:password;;
Payments and finance: In many countries, mobile payments are made by scanning QR codes. They are also used to share cryptocurrency addresses.
Events: Digital tickets with unique QR codes for access control, attendance verification, and fraud prevention.
Frequently asked questions
Do QR codes expire?
The QR code itself does not expire; it's a static image. However, if the QR points to a URL and that URL stops working, the QR becomes useless. Static QR codes (as generated by this tool) are permanent. Dynamic QR codes (from paid services) allow changing the destination URL.
What is the minimum size for a QR code?
The recommended minimum size is 2x2 cm for print and 200x200 pixels for screen. The general rule is that the scanning distance should be 10 times the QR size. A 5cm QR can be comfortably scanned at 50cm.
Is it safe to scan QR codes?
Be cautious with QR codes in public places. Attackers can paste malicious QR codes over legitimate ones (quishing) that redirect to phishing sites. Always verify the URL before entering personal data.
Can I put a logo in the center of the QR code?
Yes, thanks to error correction. Use level H (30%) and cover no more than 30% of the central area. This tool generates QR codes with high correction by default, allowing customization without losing readability.
Error correction levels
| Level | Recovery | Recommended use |
|---|---|---|
| L (Low) | 7% | Screen, maximum capacity |
| M (Medium) | 15% | General use |
| Q (Quartile) | 25% | Printed materials |
| H (High) | 30% | With logo, outdoor |
